Secrets of Offaly Public Arts Project with Clara Musical Society:
Friends meeting house in Clara to be turned into a musical instrument!
Clara Musical Society were delighted to have been chosen to take part in the Secrets of Offaly project with Offaly County Council Arts Office. This project ‘Meeting House’ was awarded to Tom Lane (Composer) Maeve Stone (Director) and Rory Grubb (Composer/Artist) from Dublin who will create a sound installation with an accompanying live performance to reflect the connection between the Goodbody Family in Clara and the Clara Musical Society. Clara MS acquired a 99 year lease to The Friends Meeting House building from the Goodbody Family trustees in 1989 for one pound.
To reflect the history of manufacturing in Clara the primary material for creating the installation will be jute. Jute will be strung throughout the building, tuned and used as a sound generating material. The installation will be left in place for one month and visitors will be encouraged to play the strings themselves. By focussing on a material that is deeply connected to the history of the building and the local area, and integrating this into the structure and shape of the Meeting House, they will be turning the house into a musical instrument.
The live performances will take place on Friday 27th of November at 7 pm and Saturday 28th of November at 6 pm and 8 pm.
