The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government issued draft planning guidelines in September 2008 entitiled "The Planning System and Flood Risk Management". Offaly County Council uses these guidelines to assess planning applications in areas of flood risk.
Flood Risk Assessment and Management (FRAM) studies have been carried out in Portarlington and Tullamore.
