Preservation and improvement of our Rivers and Groundwater are important in order to ensure a safe drinking water supply and to provide assimilative capacity for unavoidable pollutants from sewage treatment. Our Rivers are also important amenity assets for the county.

Currently 70% of the rivers in County Offaly are failing to meet good status under the Water Framework Directive and must be improved by 2015. The groundwater in County Offaly is classed as "good status".

Everyone can contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of our rivers and groundwater:

• Report an activity that may cause pollution to a river or groundwater
• Maintain your septic tank or effluent treatment system in good condition. Download a guide on maintaining waste water treatment systems.
• Ensure that foul and surface water connections are correct. Sinks, showers, toilets, washing machines & dishwashers should drain to the foul system) Roofs, paths, driveways should drain to the surface water system.
• Do not dispose of fats, oils and grease "down the drain"
• Do not use an in-sink waste disposal unit. This type of waste should be composted if possible.
• Enjoy the amenity of our rivers.
