'Public realm is a broad term used to describe the form and use of outdooor areas that are accessible to the public. This includes streets, squares, paths, parks and car parks, thus accounting for a large percentage of the town's land mass and greatly influencing the way in which it looks and functions.' p7

Offaly Bridges, Fred Hamond, 2005.Part one,part two. This survey covers all 407 named bridges in the county.

The Column, Emmet Square 2009. The conservation architects, Howley Hayes were commissioned to prepare a report on the Column in Emmet Square, Birr. This had been highlighted as a key area of work by the Birr Public Realm Study, 2008. Download column report. The column was conserved in 2009 and 2010. The works were funded by the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government and Birr Town Council.

Syngefield Gates - These important mid 18th century gates are in the ownership of Offaly Local Authorities and are part of the landscape demesne of Syngefield House, now in private ownership. These gates have undergone conservation during 2007 -2010. . This work was funded by the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government and Birr Town Council.

Birr Civic Offices and Library - .Birr Civic Offices and Birr Library are now sited in the lovely Gothic Revival building designed in the mid 19th century by A.W. Pugin as a Convent for the Sisters of Mercy. The chapel has been superbly restored as a library. It houses local treasures including a facsimile of the Macregol Gospels scripted and illuminated in Birr about 800 AD, the original of which is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

Blundell Castle, Edenderry. This ruined medieval castle in Edenderry is in the ownership of Offaly Local Authorities. Margaret Quinlan Architects were commissioned to establish its significance and work needed. During 2007 and 2008 conservation works were undertaken to secure the site.
