Africa Day at Edenderry Library

The 25th of May each year is celebrated as Africa Day. It is an opportunity to celebrate African diversity and success, and join Africans around the world in highlighting the cultural and social energy of the continent. The date, 25th May 1963, represents the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), when 30 leaders of 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Irish Aid, the Government's overseas development programme, supported a nation-wide programme of events from the 15th to the 25th of May this year.

Edenderry Community Development Project in conjunction with Offaly County Council celebrated Africa Day in Edenderry library on the 25th of May 2010. Highlights of the evening included African Dance and Music, African Poetry Citation, Jewellery workshop and a talk by Salome Mbugua, Director of AKiDwA (African and Migrant Women's network in Ireland) followed by African food. The event was well attended by African and Irish nationals alike.
