Bealtaine is a national festival held during the month of May, which celebrates creativity in older age.

The following events are talking place in Offaly Libraries for Bealtaine:

Exhibitions

Edenderry Library

  • "Through a Swedish Lens" This is an exhibition presented by the National Folklore Collection, UCD. The exhibition illustrates the work of 4 Swedish ethnologists who visited Ireland 1920-1950.  The exhibition will be launched by Críostóir Mac Cárthaigh, Archivist, UCD, Wednesday 19th May. Edenderry Library  
  • "100 Years of the ICA" To mark the Centenary year of the Irish Country Woman’s Association the library is holding an exhibition on the country wide organisation from its inception in 1910.  The exhibition (running from 4th -8th May) will also include photographs from Edenderry branch which was set up in 1954.

  • "Memories of Daingean" photographic exhibition.

Birr Library

  • Art Exhibition by Ana Alves Smyth

Events

Tullamore Library

  • "Timeless Classics Film Festival" Movies from the golden age of cinema. Popcorn and other refreshments supplied. Tuesdays in May 11.30am Thursdays in May 3pm. Contact the library for details of films on view.
  • "Books & Biscuits"Information gathering to discuss favourite books and authors in a relaxed environment over a cuppa. There will also be an optional tour and a brief talk on using the Internet to find your next read. Wednesday 5th May 11:00am & Wednesday 26th May 3:00pm
  • "Over 55s Table Quiz & Coffee Morning"General knowledge quiz for teams of 4, followed by refreshments. Wednesday May 12th 11:00am
  • "Poetry Appreciation" Bring along your favourite poem (new of classic) and share it. There will also be a display of poetry books available in Tullamore Library and we will play a selection of poetry from our audio collection. Wednesday May 19th, 3:00pm

Clara Library

  • "Table Quiz & Coffee Morning"(for Active Retirement Group) General knowledge quiz for teams of 4 followed by refreshments. Wednesday May 5th, 2:30pm.
  • "Flower Arranging with Maura Digam" (for Active Retirement Group), Wednesday 19th May, 2:30pm

Edenderry Library

  • "Circle Dance" Circle dance consists of meditative and therapeutic dance, both ancient and new from around the world and is an enjoyable and relaxing experience for participants. The dances are simple and easy to learn. Saturday morning May 8th 11:00am
  • "Crafts with Veronica Bermingham" Participants will make table mats from reeds. Refreshments provided. Friday, May 14th, 10:00am
  • "Jane Austen Sewing Kit" Creative Writing Session with Eileen Casey. Wednesday, May 12th 6:00pm

Birr Library

  • "Games Morning" Card games, scrabble and chess. Tuesday May 4th, 10:30am
  • "Launch of Senior Book Club" New Senior Book Club to be launched Wednesday, May 12th, 10:30am. The group will meet monthly to discuss books over tea and coffee
  • "Thursday Club"Tea and coffee will be served. There will be a variety of guest speakers. thursday May 20th, 10:00am
