Offaly County Library Service and the Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative (MLPSI) have won the prestigious European Award for Languages (EAL), also known as the European Language Label for a joint language project which involved the participation of four Offaly primary schools (Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Eoin - Rath, Mercy Covent NS - Birr, St. Cronan's NS- Lusmagh & Shinrone Mixed NS). The award ceremony took place on Friday 25th September in Farmleigh. The keynote address was given by Professor David Crystal, a writer, editor, lecturer and broadcaster.

Birr Library Wins European Award

Offaly County Library services will receive a European Award for Languages - the Language Label 2009 for its involvement in a languages project in Birr Library facilitated by Martina Needham, Executive Librarian in Birr. The awards ceremony will take place in Dublin on Friday 25th September 2009. This is the first time that a library has received an award for its involvement in the project.

Birr Library was the setting for a wonderful afternoon of storytelling on July 4th. Carol Drinkwater captivated her audience with tales of romance, heartache and the search to find the source of the original Olive tree.
