Once Upon a Story-time 2017

4 stamps completes the Logbook which must then be returned to the relevant library on or before Tuesday, October 31st.

Each family who does this will then qualify for a Certificate of Participation and each library will then enter all of its completed Logbooks into a draw for a free family trip to Dublin Zoo.

Certificate presentations and prize draws will take place in each branch later that week.

On Wednesday, September 27th, Birr Library played host to the official launch of Once Upon a Story-time 2017, Offaly Libraries early literacy initiative for 2 -6 year olds.

The initiative aims to encourage joint reading with young children – whether at home, in school, in crèche or in the library. Children can take part if their school/playschool is participating or they can have the shared-reading experience at home. It will be run through the libraries in Birr, Clara, Edenderry and Tullamore during October.

Each of the four participating libraries has a different theme for the programme: Birr’s is Dr. Seuss; Clara’s is Fairytales; Edenderry’s is Animals and Tullamore’s is Julia Donaldson.

Reading is a critical skill and sharing books together encourages lifelong readers. Leading experts have proven that reading aloud with children is the single most important activity for building the skills they will later require for learning to read.

As part of the programme, participating libraries will offer local schools and crèches a school visit or a library visit. Alternatively, parents can visit a participating library, join up their child for free (if they are not already a member), pick up a Once Upon a Story-time Family Logbook from a member of staff, choose a book from the selected category for free and enjoy reading it together. Each story read with someone will gain a stamp in the Logbook. This could be during a library visit to the school, a class visit to the library, a class story-time, a story reading at home etc.

The fact that Birr Library’s theme is Dr. Seuss was strongly in evidence at the launch on Wednesday with displays of his books and a special story-time for Junior and Senior Infants pupils from Mercy Primary School, Birr featuring one of Dr. Seuss’ most famous creations The Cat in the Hat. Offaly County Council’s Leas Cathaoirleach, John Clendennen was on hand to officially launch the programme and introduce the story-time and spoke encouragingly to the children assembled about the initiative.

Once Upon a Story-time is just one of a series of events and activities which form Offaly Libraries’ Autumn / Winter Programme 2017. The programme has something for adults and children and includes talks, workshops, exhibitions, author visits and more. You can pick up a copy of the brochure at your local Library or download a copy here.
