What do I need to do when selling my car?
If you sell your vehicle or trade it in for a new model in Ireland, you must register the change of ownership, otherwise you will remain liable for motor tax due or fines or penalty points issued against the vehicle.
Registering the change depends on whether your vehicle was first registered
1) before January 1st 1993.
2) on or after January 1st 1993
My car was first registered before January 1st 1993.
If you sell your vehicle privately, you will need to complete a Change of Ownership form (RF 200) with the buyer and send or bring it and the tax book to:

Co. Offaly.
The change of ownership will be recorded and the tax book will be forwarded to the new owner. The form RF200 is available from our office.

*On 28/05/2004 the Registration Certificate was introduced which combined the Vehicle Registration Certificate and the Vehicle Licensing Certificate in one document. A Registration Certificate is issued for any vehicle which has changed ownership or changed particulars since then. If your vehicle does not fall into this category then you may still have a Vehicle Licensing Certificate for your vehicle
In all cases the accurate recording of the change of ownership, including the exact date of sale is the responsibility of the Seller of the vehicle
