Private cars are tested under the National Car Test system.  Goods vehicles are tested under the Road Safety Authority testing system at approved garages. These garages conduct tests on vehicles, record the results and issue a pass or fail statement. This Pass Statement may be exchanged for a Certificate of Roadworthiness at any time but is usually done when the vehicle licence is being renewed.

Under vehicle testing regulations, a goods vehicle is a vehicle constructed or adapted primarily for the conveyance of goods or burden or any description whether or not it is used for such a purpose. This includes vehicles such as car vans and 4X4 vehicles converted for goods use. The motor tax category of a vehicle has no bearing on how the vehicle must be tested.

Cars

Cars are tested under the National Car Test system.  Cars are first tested four or more years after they are first registered* and every two years thereafter.  The certificate is valid until a further two years of the cars age has elapsed (eg if a car tested at 5 years old the cert will only last until the 6th anniversary of the cars registration).
