ABOUT THE KODALY PROGRAMME
The Kodaly Programme is an approach to music education that is based on teaching, learning and understanding music through the experience of singing.
This combination of playing and singing musical games at an age appropriate level allows pupils to experience music-making whilst simultaneously learning about all of the elements of music.
(Pupils from Scoil Naisiunta Naomh Eoin, Rath Co.Offaly)
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Kodály programme is delivered by tutors who implement a comprehensive and progressive programme within pre and primary schools. The tutors are suitably qualified musicians recruited and trained by Music Generation Offaly Westmeath and their partners in the Kodály approach.
In the primary school setting the programme is adaptable for all classes from Junior and Senior Infants up to 6th Class, and is taught on a whole class basis.
The programme runs for 30 weeks per year, within the school timetable, and content follows the established methodology of the Kodály approach at an age-appropriate level, focusing on singing but with some pre-instrumental work using classroom percussion.
The tutors visit participating schools twice per week, i.e. two 30-min sessions per week for every group. This means that the programme becomes embedded in the daily life of the school and the tutor has the opportunity to become part of the school team.
