APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF "APPROPRIATE PERIOD" (Fee €62) MUST BE MADE BEFORE THE EXPIRY OF THE PLANNING PERMISSION.
Applications to extend the appropriate period by such additional period not exceeding 5 years may be made to the Planning Authority provided that either:
A. The development was commenced before the expiration of the appropriate period and substantial works have been carried out and the development will be completed within a reasonable time
OR
B. The development was not commenced nor substantially completed due to considerations of a commercial, economic or technical nature and
IF THE DEVELOPMENT INCLUDES A SEPTIC TANK/EFFLUENT SYSTEM:
You will be required to undertake a new percolation test in accordance with 2009 EPA Code of Practice. In this regard you should arrange to contact the Environment Section of the Council IMMEDIATELY for assistance in completion of application for a new percolation test. The current fee for such a test is €550.
You are advised to submit Percolation Test Applications to the Environment Section a minimum of 12 weeks prior to applying for permission to extend the appropriate period or as soon as possible to ensure that (a) the test can be carried out and results issued and (b) any required changes to the septic tank/effluent treatment system as required by the 2009 EPA Code of Practice may be made.
It should also be noted that if you have the results of the new percolation test and details of any required changes to the proposed septic tank/effluent treatment system, you should attach same to your application for permission to extend the appropriate period.

Once an application for an extension of the appropriate period has been received, the Planning Authority must adhere to strict time constraints in accordance with planning legislation.
