Road Safety
We’re committed to providing a safe road network and to raising public awareness about road safety.
The Council has currently appointed a Road Safety Officer with the responsibility for promoting road safety activities within the County.
We currently run a number of schemes designed to improve the safety of our roads. (they are seen in further detail below)
School Warden Scheme
The Junior School Warden service is designed to provide safe crossing facilities in the vicinity of primary schools in provincial towns and villages.
Training is carried out by the members of the Gardai and certificates are presented to the wardens on completion.
Co-Ordination of Road Safety Together Commitee
In 1996 the Minister for the Environment and Local Government requested the establishment of working groups for road safety at local level to co-ordinate the efforts of all the agencies involved with road safety in order to reduce the number of road accidents.
A Road Safety Committee has been set up in County Offaly which comprises representatives of the National Safety Council, Gardai, elected members and staff of Offaly County Council.
School Flashing Lights
Flashing lights may be erected at approaches to schools on heavily trafficked routes as a measure in road safety
Traffic Calming Measures
With a view to reducing speeding on approaches to new roundabouts or on approaches to built-up areas the Council may introduce measures such as rumble strips, or in the case of built-up areas within the 30 m.p.h. speed zones, traffic calming schemes.
Public notice and consultation with the Gardai is required and representations must be considered.
