Who is reponsible for the pipework?

Houses usually have an external and internal stop tap. In most cases the external stop tap is located at the boundary of your property. External stop taps are the responsibilty of Offaly County Council. We are happy for you to use this stop tap, but also recommend that you consider having your own private means of isolating your supply.Water can be turned off by rotating the stop cock in an anti-clockwise direction.

Internal stop taps can usually be found in the pipework under your kitchen sink or in the downstairs bathroom or cloakroom.

If you are on a water meter, you may have a stop tap that is installed inside the meter chamber.  The stop tap will either be a square plastic head which needs to be turned 90 degrees to its closed position to turn off the supply or if it’s a brass tap it needs to be screwed down until it reaches a natural stop.
