Offaly County Council is delighted to announce that in partnership with the ESB and the Tullamore Show, the Sustainability Village will be powered by Green Hydrogen.
This will be the first Agricultural Show in Ireland and outdoor event in the Republic of Ireland to be powered by Green Hydrogen and is a Tullamore Decarbonising Zone initiative in collaboration with ESB, Geopura and the Tullamore Show.
The Tullamore and FBD National Livestock Show is taking place on August 10th 2025 at the Butterfield Estate, Blueball, in County Offaly.
In 2024 the ESB launched a new hydrogen power generation demonstration fuel cell to showcase what is the first deployment of hydrogen to electricity in Ireland. The units are produced by GeoPura, a UK-based renewable energy company, and their partner, Siemens Energy. This type of hydrogen power unit can support the network by using fuel cell technology, converting hydrogen to electricity, to supply up to 250kW of clean power when required – with the only by-product being pure water.
The showcasing of this HPU in Tullamore is a unique opportunity to demonstrate green technology and to utilize Tullamore as a test bed of what is possible for decarbonising, addressing local low carbon energy, greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation, climate, and biodiversity actions at local and community levels, to help support and realise national climate ambition.
The Tullamore show will see two HPUs, one will provide power to the Sustainability Village replacing diesel generators. The second HPU will be set up and available for the public to learn about and see the new green hydrogen technology. We also look forward to engaging with the visitors to the Tullamore Show on this application of new technology and emissions free energy.

Through this project Offaly County Council aims to demonstrate that the Tullamore Decarbonising Zone can lead in delivering climate action and sustainability action through innovation, technology and creativity.
