Offaly County Council Fire and Rescue Service achieves both an International Health and Safety Accreditation and a Quality Management Accreditation

Offaly County Council Fire and Rescue Service has been awarded the ‘ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System’ accreditation, which is the world’s first international standard for OH&S.

Chief Fire Officer Eoin O’Ceilleachair advised “the standard aims to provide a safe and healthy workplace for our staff, visitors to our fire stations, contractors, and other parties with whom we interact.  It provides a framework which allows us to continually improve our OH&S performance with the ultimate goals of:

  • reducing work-related injury and ill-health
  • eliminating or reducing risk
  • motivating and empowering our firefighters, officers and support staff through greater and better staff participation, consultation and communication
  • enhancing and improving engagement with management
  • enabling and supporting a shift in safety culture and attitude within the service”.

In achieving ISO45001 certification, “Offaly County Fire and Rescue Service is being officially recognised by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) for demonstrating a high-quality OH&S management system.  All of our staff should be extremely proud of their contribution to achieving this accreditation, from their positive engagement with the process, through to the implementation of new procedures and the use of new technology.  Staff from across the service can feel their needs and safety are being taken into account and that a positive safety culture is in place” added Mr O’Ceilleachair.

Director of Services, Sharon Kennedy, also advised that “Offaly County Council Fire and Rescue Service has also been awarded the ‘ISO 9001 Quality Management System’ accreditation by NSAI.”

ISO 9001 is the world’s foremost quality management standard, used by hundreds of thousands of organisations in over 170 countries around the globe. It sets out the essential requirements for a practical and effective quality management system which is, in essence, a system for minimising risk.

ISO 9001 certification helps us to continually monitor and manage quality, identify areas for improvement, and provides a framework for improving our processes and procedures.
