Offaly County Council signs the Charter of the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change

Offaly County Council is the first Council in the Midlands Region to sign the Charter of the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change in support of the goals of the European Green Deal and the EU Climate Adaptation Strategy.


Speaking at the signing of the Charter, Chief Executive Anna Marie Delaney outlined that “We recognise the pivotal role the Council holds as an agent of positive Climate Action, and aim to proactively demonstrate public sector leadership on climate action as well as being key mobilisers of action at local and community level.”  Ms Delaney added “Climate Action is a core principal of our Corporate Plan and is something we are very passionate to deliver.”


On behalf of Offaly County Council Elected Members, Cathaoirleach Cllr Frank Moran acknowledges by signing this Charter, “Offaly is a county which showcases innovation and mobilising community engagement on an ongoing basis. Offaly is now well placed at the forefront of innovation in Europe’s transition to becoming a more resilient continent which we will also benefit from locally. ”


Climate Action Officer, John McNally advises “By signing up to the Charter and the tenets of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, Offaly County Council will become part of a community of practice on adaptation to climate change, and have the opportunity to network, connect with, share experiences with and learn from other regions and communities in Europe.” “The EU Climate Adaptation Mission aims to support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030. We look forward to continuing our journey to a climate proofed economy and resilient society” added John.


Director of Services, Tom Shanahan outlined the signing of the Charter “complements the recently launched EMERGE training and mentoring programme delivered by our colleagues in the Eastern and Midlands CARO Office, Urban Foresight and The Wheel through funding provided under Just Transition and the Carbon Tax fund.”
