The fund for this scheme was increased in the recent council budget in acknowledgement of the importance of cultural expression in this significant year. The funding scheme is competitive and applicants are encouraged to ensure that proposed projects are innovative and ambitious, incorporate a centenary theme and provide maximum impact in the community with it objectives. In 2016, a pivotal period in our history will be remembered; it is time to reflect on the past 100 years and to re-imagine our future. It is hoped this creative remembrance will build a new legacy of hope, belief, possibility and confidence. With this in mind the Arts Act Grants 2016 are open to creative and cultural projects in the community that directly focus on and reflect the themes of this year of commemoration.
Arts Officer Sinead O’Reilly explains “for 2016, reflecting upon centenary is essential; it will be exciting to see this will be conveyed by successful applicants through various art forms in new and innovative ways.”
Many great projects are funded through this scheme every year and in 2015 it included youth mental health charity Jigsaw who received a grant towards the original play Write Your Mind in collaboration with Offaly Youth Theatre. Projects also included a sculpture workshop at Arden View Family Resource Centre, where a sculpture was unveiled recently, the supporting of St Mary’s Youth Centre’s production of ‘Grease’ and the Club sessions which recent saw Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill perform in Tullamore.
