Offaly 100 - Together we Remember

Offaly 100

Together we remember - chéile cuimhin linn

We invite you, your family and your neighbours, your friends and your colleagues, to remember, to reflect and to celebrate 100 years of our nation in Offaly.

In this centenary year this is our opportunity to come together as citizens of Offaly to remember those who fought for Irish independence.

This is a FREE NON TICKETED EVENT for all our citizens.

Together let us create a new history of hope for the next centenary.

Eleven men from Offaly are known to have fought in the Easter Rising (Éamonn Bulfin, Peadar Bracken, Séamus Kenny, James Carroll, Séamus O’Brennan, Patrick McDonnell, Patrick Doyle, Séamus Kelly, Joseph Doolan, Kieran Kenny and Michael Foley) and together we remember their contribution towards Irish Independence by the raising of the Irish Flag, the laying of a wreath and the reading of the Proclamation.

Led by a lone piper, at dusk we will proceed in a candlelit walk to Colmcille Street to the scene where, on 20th March 1916, an incident led to Padraig Pearse saying ‘A great deed was done last night at Tullamore, when blood was shed in defence of the Volunteers’ right to carry arms...’ The unveiling of a new flagstone to mark this location will take place and the piper will lead us on to the Church of Assumption.

Featuring some of the best of Offaly’s musicians and headlined by Mundy and Donal Lunny, with Simon Casey, Seán Ryan, Olivia Burke, Diarmuid Guinan, Ruaile Buaile, Joe Maher and a host of choirs, bands and musicians including Birr Choral Society, members of Offaly Comhaltas, Eden Chorale, Danna Davis, Gerard Gillen, Offaly County Council Choir, Tullamore Pipe Band, Edenderry Rockers and St. Manchan's Youth Choir. Over 150 performers will raise the roof with some of the most iconic pieces of Irish music over the past 100 years. Punctuated by spoken word and poetry, this momentous concert, directed by Colin Hughes, is not to be missed.
