Did you know that our national flag – the tricolour of green, white and orange – was designed by US Army General Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848 and was first flown in Waterford?
The 1916 centenary year is a unique opportunity to discover the origin of our national emblem, why these colours were chosen and what they signify for us today.
To mark this special occasion, every primary and special school in the country will be presented with a specially made flag, delivered by members of our Defence Forces. Secondary schools will receive a flag at a special ceremony, in conjunction with the Thomas Meagher Foundation.
