International Agreements

The Kyoto Protocol agreement of 1997 set individual national targets for a package of six green house gases, to be achieved by the commitment period of 2008-2012.

Ireland ratified the Kyoto protocol in 2002 & is internationally legally bound to limit the growth of green house gas emissions to 13% above 1990 levels in the 2008-2012 period. In 2004, actual national emissions were 23.1% above 1990 levels.

Failure to achieve the target will result in Ireland having to buy carbon credits
