Offaly Libraries’ Events for Children’s Book Festival 2020

Children’s Book Festival 2020 runs nationally for the month of October and is a great opportunity for young people, parents, teachers, and libraries to celebrate books and reading! Offaly Library Service is marking this very special time of year with an array of events and activities. Many of our traditional events have gone online this year but there are still plenty of reasons to visit one of the libraries in our branch network!

Authors Judi Curtin and Oisín McGann will be enthralling and entertaining school classes via Zoom sessions hosted remotely from selected library venues during the month. Sarah Webb and Alan Nolan will also be Zooming with a family-oriented online workshop based around their new book Animal Crackers. Storyteller Niall de Búrca whose unmissable talents have graced many a national and international venue will be entertaining us over Facebook with 2 pre-recorded tales with an Offaly flavour.

Stories read aloud are an intrinsic feature of childhood and Offaly Libraries is celebrating this during CBF. The storytelling talent of our own team will be on show with staff paying e-visits via Zoom to schools throughout the county for virtual story-time fun with Zoom to the Library! Live Story-times. There will also be a selection of pre-recorded stories made available over Facebook especially for this special time of year with our CBF Online Stories series!

We are holding a Dress up as your Favourite Book Character competition where younger users can create a costume to dress up as their favourite book character. They can then get their picture taken in costume and e-mail it to us for a chance to win a prize! Download the entry form here!

Keeping in that creative vein, there will be online craft videos via Facebook featuring two videos by Aidan Byrne and one by a member of our own team. Our Crafty Take-away kits provide our younger patrons with a craft project in a bag containing all the basic materials needed to create a craft project (while stocks last) which they can bring home and complete.

If you want to find out specific dates, times, requirements, etc. for any of these events, the Offaly Libraries CBF brochure is available here, keep an eye on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/offalylibraries or ring your local library for further details.

Don’t forget, there is a world of reading waiting for children and their families in their local library and your free library membership now gives you access to literally millions of items in the national public library network. Why contact your local branch to find out about arranging a visit to the library or to find out more? CBF is a great time to reconnect with books and with your local library. We’re looking forward to seeing you!
