The Government has agreed that Level 5 (with some amendments) as set out in the Plan for Living with COVID-19 will continue to apply nationally until further notice. The Government has clearly stated that there is a continued need to minimise the level of mobility and congregation of people in order to reduce all opportunities for transmission of the virus.

Please note that our library buildings have reopened to the public for Browsing Services and Contact & Collect since Monday, May 10th. Please see Library Page.

Consequently, and in line with current public health guidance, the Offices of Offaly County Council are closed for walk-in services to support this reduced mobility policy.

Public access cannot be facilitated during LEVEL 5 restrictions. Therefore, Offaly County Council services will be available by telephone, email, online post and only where absolutely necessary and in exceptional circumstances by appointment. Please read latest information.

Summer Stars at Offaly Libraries

Summer Stars is the Right to Read National Summer Reading Programme for children that runs from the 14th of June until the end of August. For 2021, the programme will be delivered online with lots of fun activities planned for Summer Stars 2021, including the following:

Activities for Summer Stars 2021:

  • Summer Stars BorrowBox: Browse, borrow, read and listen to the Summer Stars collection of children’s e-books and e-audio books through the library’s BorrowBox app. This is free for all members to use from anywhere, anytime. Non-members can join online for free at https://lgma.iii.com/selfreg

  • Online Storytime: Summer Stars story time will be delivered by library staff and Irish authors including chapter-a-day readings from books, available through Offaly Libraries social media pages. Click HERE to view our Summer Stars Online Stories.   

  • Story Competition: As well an enjoying the amazing worlds of books, Summer Stars is also celebrating children’s imaginations by running a short story competition. To enter, write a story using the following opening line: Of all the places in the world, I never thought I would be here. 
    There are three age categories with great prizes for all the winners and runners-up.  Click HERE for further information on the competition and how to enter.

  • Books: Come visit your local library to borrow Summer Stars books, we have lots of new books for you to enjoy.

  • Reading cards and reviews: Children can track their reading progress with reading cards which can be marked each time a book is read, online or in print form. Download your Reading Card HERE.
    A reviews section on www.summerstars.ie allows readers to upload their views on what they have read.

  • Online Quizzes: Offaly Libraries will provide Summer Stars online quizzes and scavenger hunts over the period, details will be posted on social media. Book in on Eventbrite.
