Summer Stars – Reading Adventure for Children at Offaly Libraries

Offaly Library Service ran the Summer Stars Reading Adventure for children in all library branches during the Summer to the end of August. The programme was officially launched in Birr Library on Saturday, June 23rd. 1017 children participated in the programme county wide – 54% increase on last year’s figures of 660.

Children were encouraged to continue reading throughout the programme and there was a rewards system in place along the adventure. The awards system worked particularly well this year. Children had an opportunity to win a backpack for the best book reviews –and there was a big response county-wide to this competition. The lucky winners collected their backpacks in Tullamore Library on Saturday 29th September.

This year Buckley’s Cycles Athlone and Tullamore kindly agreed to sponsor this event by providing one lucky participant from the county with a bicycle. This proved to be a huge incentive to children county-wide to get involved in the programme. The lucky winner of the bicycle was Anna Sheila Gath –a Tullamore borrower. Anna Sheila collected her prize from Buckley’s cycles also on Saturday 29th September.
