Summer Stars - Winners!

Summer Stars Charlie
Summer Stars Winners 2019

There were great celebrations in Tullamore Library last Saturday as the Summer Stars winners collected their prizes. Summer Stars is a Reading programme that takes place in all public libraries throughout the country during the Summer months. It is a nationwide programme which encourages reading and gives awards/incentives to children throughout.  Over 1200 children participated in Offaly.

Incorporated into Offaly’s programme 2019 was a book review competition, whereby children wrote reviews of books read. There was a huge response to this competition, which was independently judged by ‘Wordsmiths, creative writing group’. Categories of ages ranged from 7-12 years. Each winner won a backpack. Cllr. Peter Ormond, Cathlaoirleach, Offaly County Council, presented each winner with their prize in Tullamore Library on Saturday 21st September.

Participants in the programme were also motivated by the chance of winning a bike, kindly sponsored by Donagh McArdle of Tullamore Cycle Centre, Tanyard, Tullamore. The lucky winner was Charlie Deforge, Birr, Co. Offaly.  Staff at Offaly libraries wish Charlie ‘well ware’ and happy cycling.  In attendance for the presentation of the bike were  Cllr. Peter Ormond, Cathlaoirleach, Offaly County Council, Daithi Deforge (Charlie’s Dad) and Donagh McArdle, owner, Tullamore Cycle Centre.
